FAQ

What is the difference between local and external?

Local starts the Lane server on this computer and uses 127.0.0.1. External dials a hostname and port and does not start a server here. The default host is us-central1-lane-client.cloudfunctions.net. A saved external address of 127.0.0.1 is rewritten to that name. The connection uses the hostname.

Which address do I type on the phone?

Use the external line when the phone is away from the server's network. Use the LAN line when the phone is on the same Wi-Fi. The desktop app on the same machine uses 127.0.0.1 and that port.

Which port does the server use?

UDP 443 by default. If that port cannot be bound, set listen_port in server.toml. The banner says so when UDP on that port is not reachable from the internet.

What are the family filter choices?

None, block malware, or block malware and adult content. Our server selects the matching DNS view.

Do I need the Windows launcher?

The launcher boots a Linux guest and prints the two addresses. You can also run the terminal binary on Windows without a guest. Linux and macOS use that terminal binary directly.
